Happy New Year! We're kicking off our 2022 blog series with a Team Member Spotlight featuring our Account Director, Shireen Ali-Khan.

Read on as we chat with Shireen and find out more about her background before JFG Comms and why she chose to work in public affairs.

What is your job title at JFG Comms, and can you give us an overview of the kind of work you do on a day-to-day basis?

I’m an Account Director. My role involves supporting our clients to ensure their outcomes are achieved. I deliver stakeholder engagement, from fulfilling comms roles to delivering campaigns.

My work is really varied, and I’ve had the opportunity to work with some very interesting clients.

What was your background before working with JFG Comms?

I have worked on major projects including Crossrail, HS2, Tideway as well as working for Transport for London, which involved working with local communities and stakeholders.

I also worked on one of the very first STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) outreach programmes from the Royal Academy of Engineering, called the London Engineering Project. We worked to engage young people from Primary upwards to take up STEM careers. This was a fantastic project to be involved with and great to be able to encourage young people and promote STEM as a career option.

What made you choose to work in public affairs?

It’s really important to me to be able to tell the story of how people are affected by certain projects and major works. Working in public affairs enables me to do that and by telling the story I can help promote the wonderful industry we work in. It’s also really fun!

What first attracted you to JFG Comms?

The people, the work and the environment!

I was delighted to join JFG Comms as I knew we were going to be delivering some great projects in a sector I love.

All of the team are super supportive and I love being part of a virtual team. Being able to work flexibly really allows me to thrive and flourish. I can enjoy family life while at the same time knowing I don’t have to compromise my professional ability.

Jo is a real joy to work with and for, and has been a role model in how she empowers those around her to be their best.

How has your role changed since starting with JFG Comms?

I initially came on board as a Senior Communications Consultant, so my work was very comms focused. Since then, my role has developed into being more people focused. Through my work with our customers, I’ve been able to demonstrate my ability to understand their requirements and deliver plans that are tailored to their exact needs.

Jo is always really supportive and encourages us all to develop in our roles.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I am a mum and so much of my time outside of work is taken up with play dates and classes. I enjoy reading, walking and the outdoors. Travel is also important to me and I’m really glad I took a year off to travel before the pandemic!

What would you say to someone looking to pursue a career in public affairs?

I would say just go ahead and do it. If you’re interested in people, building relationships and influencing decision-making this would definitely be a good career path. Try and speak to people already working in public affairs for an idea of what to expect and to find out a bit more about the profession.

And lastly, what would you say to someone who was thinking of applying for a job at JFG Comms?

We’re a great team, supportive, and no two days are the same. You will learn lots!
